The Astrology of Encanto Final

(This is part of a series. Read the first one here and the second one here.)

The Astrology of the Movie Encanto

Aside from the hollywood premiere chart, I also looked at the charts of Encanto's various release dates, including the public premiere, and the disney plus premiere.

The Hollywood premiere is the film equivalent of when the baby was born at the hospital. The public premiere is when that baby is presented, think of Simba, up on that rock.

Encanto Public Premiere

For the USA public premiere chart, we see the ascendant is in cancer with the moon in the first house. This film wears its heart on its sleeve and that gives a great first impression to the public.

The moon is strong in its home sign of Cancer. It is part of a grand trine with neptune on the midheaven and what's left of that scorpio stellium that was present in the hollywood premiere chart- mars and mercury lingering at the end of scorpio with the sun hovering nearby in the early degrees of sagittarius. This configuration gives this movie a far-reaching popularity, ensuring that we all bring the charm of Encanto home with us.

This is evident by how sticky the songs are. My kids and I have been quoting lyrics at each other since the first time we watched this movie and I know the rest of the world is feeling the same way, judging by how the film's album climbed to the top of the billboard charts recently.

We can't get the songs out of our heads and that ensures the film goes straight to our hearts, until we all feel like we are part of La Familia Madrigal.

The fate of this film becoming like family is sealed by its "homecoming" release to Disney plus on Christmas Eve at midnight Pacific time.

Encanto Disney + Premiere

This time we have another stellium, but its in capricorn, with most of the planets in this cluster sitting in the 4th house of home, family and roots. That's right, the themes of the 4th house overlap with the themes of the moon and themes of the zodiac sign cancer.

Encanto comes home.

The moon is not part of this stellium. Instead, she sits near the top of the chart, in the 11th house, the house of the masses. From this throne on the 29th degree of Leo, she shines in a beautiful trine with the sun. The zodiac sign Leo and the sun both rule children and delightful pastimes-

Encanto is sure to become a favorite for every child- and inner child- that watches it.

The Astrology of Encanto Continued

The Astrology of the Movie ENCANTO

(This is part 2 in a 3 part series. Please read the first post here.)

In this post we will highlight two areas of the natal chart for the movie Encanto, the moon stellium and the saturn square on the midheaven.

Scorpio Stellium

The first configuration of note in this chart is the stellium that spans from the last degrees of Libra into the first decan of Scorpio.

Before we go into it, let's answer everyone's question: What the heck is a stellium?

A stellium is a group of three (some astrologers prefer four) or more planets, with less than 8 degrees between each one. Some astrologers use a range of up to 10 degrees, especially if the planets are in the same sign.

In the Encanto natal chart, the stellium includes Mercury in Libra, Moon, Mars, and the Sun, all in scorpio.

A stellium generally has a "lead" planet, usually the most personal, or fast-moving,  planet.

Since the moon is the most intimate planet of the group, it is the leader here. This is also a night chart, since the sun set at 5:58 pm on this day, giving the moon even more power.

The moon is definitely in charge of this stellium.

This is evident in the way that the family in this film is run as a matriarchy. Maribel even tells us "Abuela runs the show."

But it is also noticeable in how incredibly powerful all the emotions are in this film. The deep pull of family bonds that intricately weave themselves into every area of the many characters' lives shows how rich and wonderful moon energy can be.

The Music Moves to the Rhythm of Emotions

What I love about this film is how every moment matters. They did not miss a single chance to move the story forward while also moving us emotionally. Every frame was infused with feeling, every line of dialogue told us about the story and the character speaking the lines, at the same time. Not one second was wasted.

And not a sound was wasted. Every beat, every lyric, every transition served a purpose, from the way composer Germaine Franco made the sounds say "yay antonio" during the gift ceremony, to the way "We don't talk about Bruno," takes us back to Pepa's wedding and pulls us forward into Maribel's prophecy at the same time.

The moon's theme of home, family and the mother also stretches to include themes of a home country and culture, of patriotism, of ancestral roots, and of generational ties.

This is especially evident in the film crew's attention to detail in accurately depicting the Colombian setting, the people, the culture and most importantly, the vibe. Digging deep into the roots of Colombian music to procure sounds that are both authentic and original, the music from this film really captures the rhythm that seems to permeate Colombian living- the rhythm of emotions.

Scorpio

With this moon stellium mostly residing in Scorpio, we have themes of magical realism, magical powers, power struggles, intense emotions, death, and rebirth, all within a family and within the family home.

Even the character's powers, if you look at them, reflect this moon -ruled stellium in scorpio.

Remember the stellium includes mercury, mars, moon and the sun. You have three magical children in the first generation- one controls the weather (mercury), one heals in the kitchen (moon), one has prophecies that scare people (mars)- and abuela holds the light of the candle and rules over them all (sun).

There are also plenty of strong female characters in this family, emphasizing the strength of the moon, with the male characters playing outsider (Felix, Agustin) or sacrificial (Abuelo, Bruno-actually Bruno played both) roles. The boys Camilo and Antonio have strengths, but technically they are children, which falls under the moon's domain of Home and Family.

And they are part of the second generation, which is a lot more blended and complex than the triplets were.

Louisa's magical strength paired with her incredible sensitivity is a perfect example of a moon mars conjunction, but so is Isabela's gift of flowers and cacti.

Camilo's shape-shifting can be mischievous and Antonio's gift with animals also hints at how wild the gifts can be. With the powers of the second generation split in a more unruly way, Abuela struggles to control so many temperamental gifts (or non-gifts, in Maribel's case).

But as we all learn in life-

You can't control the weather, but you can remember to carry an umbrella.

In a natal chart, a stellium indicates a strong focus of that person's energy into one area or concept in their life.

This is reflected in how "-La Familia Madrigal!" is the major theme and often the greatest motivating factor in each character's life.

We hear Isabela tell Maribel:

"I was doing it for the family!"

And Maribel tell Abuela:

"He loves this family! I love this family! We all love this family! You're the one that doesn't care!"

The Hug

The theme of Maribel hugging characters that are struggling with their powers shows the importance of the moon in this story most of all.

Maribel spontaneously hugs Luisa, then she hugs Isabela, and finally, Abuela, helping them to stretch their powers and release the fears that each person had about their gift. She also helps her tio Bruno and her tia Pepa release their fears around their powers.

Saturn conjunct Midheaven in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus

Anyone or anything born in 2021 and even some of 2022 and will have this square between Saturn and Uranus in their chart. Connections between slower moving outer planets are called generational transits. This is because a whole generation of people born during a specific period will have this aspect in their chart or feel the energy in their lives. It defines an era, rather than an individual.

But when it's connected to a personal planet or prominent point in a natal chart (like the midheaven) the themes of this aspect become more personal to that person, taking on an importance in the area of life that it is touching.

In this case, the midheaven, or medium coeli, latin for "top of the sky," is related to the legacy of the chart holder, their life's greatest work, their zenith of achievement,  so to speak. We often call this career, but it doesn't have to be about a job, although it can be. Legacy can also be about generosity, generations, impact or inspiration.  It's what the public considers as this chartholder's biggest imprint on the world.

In Lin-Manuel Miranda's natal chart, for example, the moon is on the midheaven. This makes themes of the moon- like family, cultural patriotism, history and, of course, emotions- a focus of his legacy. We can see this in how his songs tell us the character's emotions and how his writing is often an homage (look at the root word there, home) to american history, his latino roots, or an artist that inspired him,  like tick tick, boom, which is about one of his foundational muses, Jonathan Larson,  the talent behind the musical Rent.

For the movie Encanto, with Saturn on the midheaven on Aquarius, its biggest legacy is showing us the importance of honoring our elders, our roots, and the connections we have, while also encouraging us to embrace the inevitable change, and to integrate the new ways of living that shift us into the future. We could all benefit from reaching out a hand, mending misunderstandings, accept ourselves- and each other- as we are, and building a new foundation, together.

Next we briefly look at two other premiere charts for Encanto.

The Astrology of Encanto

The Astrology of the film Encanto

This film is about a magical home that gives all its family members magical powers- except for one. This one unmagical member of the Madrigal family, Maribel, learns the house's magic is in danger, and that she's the only one that can save it.

Encanto is replete with themes of family, matriarchy, magical realism, and power struggles, especially the clash between what's established, but full of cracks and secrets, and what's new, but also necessary, for building a stronger foundation.

I absolutely adored the movie Encanto so much. The huge family, the storyline and of course, the music.  When I watched the film, two things struck me: one was that the film's chart must have a strong moon and two was that the square between Uranus in Taurus and Saturn in Aquarius must also be prominent in the chart.

I was incredibly fascinated with this film and was soon asking google to tell me more about it. Curiosity can take us down some interesting rabbit holes.

I spent time watching interviews with the cast and creators that worked on this film, especially Lin-Manuel Miranda, who contributed much of the music for the film. He recommended that the characters have a choreographer right from the start. Having a choreographer involved that early is typical for a musical theater performance, but not necessarily typical to Disney.

It was a new way to do things.

In the interviews, Lin-Manuel Miranda talked about taking a research trip to Colombia to get immersed in the culture in order to get the film just right. The group spent a lot of time studying the culture and the time period so it could reflect just right in the setting of the film.

He also mentioned the film took five years to complete, in part because of the pandemic. There were plenty of delays and obstacles and most of the film was created remotely, via zoom. The cast didn't meet live until the red carpet premiere in November 2021!

This was also a new way to do things.

Those things stuck out to me as themes of the saturn uranus square that's been playing out for all of us recently, and I was wondering if it would be possible to pin down a time of birth for the film.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Natal Chart

I looked at Lin-Manuel Miranda's chart, which was available on astro-charts.com with a birth time accuracy rating of excellent.

The birth time is very important if you are looking at fast -moving parts of the chart like the moon and in Lin-Manuel's case, the midheaven.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's chart shows a moon conjunct the midheaven.

The midheaven rules over our career and legacy, making the moon a key ingredient in anything Lin-Manuel Miranda works on.

My suspicions of Encanto's moon power were increasing.

So I did some digging for date, time and location, cast the chart, and took a peek.

And it did not disappoint.

Astrology Chart For The Movie ENCANTO

Though a lot can be said (err written) about each planet in this chart, there are two major areas that I will be highlighting- the stellium in Scorpio/ Libra and Saturn conjunct the midheaven in Aquarius squaring Uranus in Taurus.

Before we dive into that, let's take a look at how I established the location, date and time for the hollywood premiere of the film Encanto.

(Psst, If you want to go straight to the hollywood premiere chart, you can click here.)

Location and Date

This was the easiest to sort out. Disney premieres most of its films at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, USA. A scroll through wikipedia confirmed that this was also the birthplace of Encanto.

That same wikipedia page showed the Hollywood premiere of the film as November 3, 2021. Two other premiere dates I've included are the public theater premiere on November 23, 2021 and the disney plus premiere on December 24, 2021.

Time

Now time was a little more work to suss out, but not much. According to this post on El Capitan Theatre's twitter account, the hollywood premiere was definitely at night.

And the public screening premiere, held three weeks later at the same location, was at 7pm, according to this post.

Also, in the movie, all the gift ceremonies start at 7pm, according to the clock that Casita presents on both Mirabel's (minute 3:20) and Antonio's (minute 15:03) big nights.

Putting this data together, I used a 7pm birth time for the Hollywood premiere chart of Encanto.

Why am I telling you all of this?

When you read moon aspects in a chart, the time needs to be pretty accurate. The moon is the fastest moving body in astrology; Things can change quickly.

And 7pm puts the moon at 0 degrees Scorpio in this chart. That means a change of just a few minutes could make a drastically different chart, with the moon in Libra instead.

However, the 7pm time puts the moon in the middle of a stellium, or group of conjunct planets. Based on the distances between the other planets in this group, and the rate at which the moon could travel through them in a day, there could be a massive time difference and the moon would still be connected to that planetary cluster. This gives more confidence in reading the moon stellium despite possible time discrepancies.

For the midheaven, we have even less margin of error, a mere two hour range from roughly 6pm to 8pm, to keep the midheaven in the same sign as Saturn. But it's a good window; Many events start between the hours of 6-8pm, so I feel that the chances are strong that the midheaven stays, if not conjunct, then at least in the same sign as Saturn.

Now let's talk about the hollywood premiere chart.
